This is a lovely compact and lightweight chess set. Referred to as ’school chess’ it’s ideal for young chess players or those that need portability while on the move. The whole set is solid wood with highly attractive staining and burning on the board. A cute little set that shows superb value for money. It has solid sheesham and boxwood chess pieces and the playing board is made from sheesham and maple. At just seven inches in diameter it is a very compact little chess set. The most striking thing about this set is it’s size. At just seven inches across it’s a very small board with miniature pieces. What’s amazing however is the attention to detail and superb quality of the set. All made from solid wood, no MDF or fibre board is used in any part of the construction. Each square on the board is a separate cutting of wood, which have each been inlaid perfectly. The solid wooden pieces have been beautifully carved in the classic Staunton style and hold an amazing amount of detail for their size. The chess pieces have magnetic bases and stick to the board which has metal hidden within it to allow the magnets to stick. A neat and concealed way of giving the appearance of magnetic wooded pieces and board.

This chess set has been a real charmer for us from the day the first sample arrived in our office. At just seven inches across it is small and compact. It has a sliding draw in the centre which contains the tiny magnetic Staunton chess pieces. What impresses us most is how well the draw fits and it’s clean crisp action. It clicks shut with the aid of sprung ball bearing. Crafted from talented artisans in Northern India &made from Sheesham and Boxwood this set both feels and smells great.
